"A network of friends, inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need." ~ St. Vincent de Paul Mission Statement
The St. Vincent de Paul Society is likely best known as the host of the monthly Coffee & Doughnuts after Mass. However, we are an integral part of our parish as we help qualified individuals with rent, utilities & other expenses during times of crisis.
SVDP is an international Catholic voluntary organization dedicated to the sanctification of its members through serving the poor and disadvantaged. Here at St. Joseph Parish, the SVDP conference has had an active presence since the mid-1960s. The group is made up of parishioners, young and old.
The Society raises money by sponsoring Coffee and Doughnuts and a Top Hat Collection on the 3rd weekend of the month. There is also the Blue Envelope Winter Crisis Collection to help when the needs are greatest in the cold weather. Checks made be made payable to St. Vincent de Paul. We partner with other churches and agencies, such as Active Faith Community Services here in South Lyon, to help meet the needs of those in the South Lyon School District. We assist with utility shut-offs, rent, auto repairs, etc.
If you, or someone you know, needs assistance, and you think SVDP may be able to help, contact Mary Ann Guerriero, Christian Service Coordinator at 248-446-8700 ext. 104. She will take your information, and if applicable, pass it on to a SVDP member who will then contact you to schedule a home visit. Once a home visit is made, the SVDP team decides together if assistance can be given. If we cannot assist, we will try to provide other resources.
If you are interested in learning more about the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Joseph Parish, stop in and see us at Coffee and Doughnuts in the Activity Center on the 3rd Sunday of the month, September through May, or contact Marlene Davis at [email protected]. If you would like to donate to SVDP, click the link to the right, or drop off or mail a check to the parish made payable to St. Vincent de Paul.
Please note that St. Joseph Parish is not a rescue shelter, a food/clothes bank or emergency help center.
